Monument Gate Ladder Blockade: Arrests & Violence
In the early morning hours on June 17, 2019 Forest Defenders erected a ladder blockade at the Monument Gate in an effort to stop logging in the Ancient Forest on Rainbow Ridge - a High Conservation Value - Ancient Forest.
Forest Defenders take action to protect this legacy forest and complex habitat structure for endangered species.
This is an un-entered Virgin Douglas Fir Forest, a Vital Carbon Sequestering Region and Unique Coastal Ecosystem unlike any other in Northern California.
3 Arrests were Made While Advocates Stood on Public Property.
Three People were violently arrested and an Independent Journalist was targeted by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department. When the first two arrests were made both individuals were on Public Property, not trespassing on the Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC) side of the road as the Sheriff ‘s Department claimed. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department seemed to target the media. When the Independent Journalist, Mike Gamms was identified as a reporter, the responding officer was captured on video saying “I don’t care.” See video below:
Mike Gamms, an Independent Journalist suffered a rib contusion and fracture, black eye, severe nose bleed and a tooth was pushed up into the gum causing extreme pain during the arrest. After being released from jail, an update was published about the Mike’s condition.
